The eyes have it!
This is a new painting that was entered for the Pastel Artist of New Zealand (PANZ) Annual Art Awards Exhibition at Nelson, 1 & 2 April 2006. Its title is 'Girl with silver earring'.
I really love painting figures and faces but have only recently discovered how much fun it is to paint them using a black ground. It is the perfect backdrop for creating drama!
This is the third face that I have painted on black and, as with any other portrait, I know that 'getting the eyes right' is crucial in capturing the spirit of the piece. In the first, Spanish eyes, they glance flirtatiously over a ruffled lace fan, while in Growing Beautiful their clarity forms a key part of a young girl's innocent gaze. So in this latest piece I did not attempt any detail with her other features until I had captured that direct and challenging stare!
And using my own eyes is very important for my development as an artist - particularly through looking at other artists work and reading about art. Currently I am excitedly waiting for two new books to arrive from UK. The first book is one that I have wanted for ages called 'The Creative Artist' by Nita Leland. This one comes highly recommended to me by an artist friend as full of ideas and practical exercises to help the artist find and develop their inner artistic self. The link will take you to Nita's website which is full of information, tips and links to help with your art.
The second book is called 'Living the Artist's Life' by author and artist Paul Dorrell. In this one the author shares his life experiences, from struggling artist to successful gallery owner. The book is reported to be full of insights, advice and wisdom for anyone trying to make their way in the world of art. Again his website is well worth a visit - lots to interest and inform.
Can hardly wait for that package to arrive!
